The Family that Geeks Together- Stays Together
February 21st, 2009It has become apparent to me that I have raised a family with strong geek tendencies and I find it quite endearing. Don’t get me wrong, we are all cultured and our interests range from the arts to medicine but deep down we are way techno-geek and nerdy about our passions.
Case in point- my son’s recent letter to me.
Mom,
I have created a spreadsheet of To Do’s for me for the new
house along with description and tentative due dates. Hopefully this will help
expedite the situation and get the work done. Let me know if any of this doesn’t
work for you. Love you.
His spreadsheet is below. This is typical of how we communicate within our family about the various projects we are working on. I hope to share some before and almost done project pics on the new house for those of you who are interested in seeing what we are creating together in my family of Geeks.
So what kind of emails do you get from your 22 year old son? Is your family in touch with its inner geek?
can your 22 year old son come over and help me set up my video/computer network?
I like to think both my sons ended up in tech fields because we had wireless access points strung all over the house, trying to keep us connected back in the day when it was all an experiment! Loved reading this…my 8 year old daughter started to ask me a question about the Pennies for Peace project they are doing at school…halfway through the question she said, “Oh, wait…I’ll just check my delicious account, I think I bookmarked something.”. Driving across the state yesterday, 5 year old son asked if I could check my phone for the week’s temperatures so he could plan the days he’d be able to ride his bike (he was concerned about ice;) Yep, I admit, we are geeks too
I hope he doesn’t send you the bill when his list of ‘to do’ is done.
Remember that NZ still has openings for techno-geeks. I’m sure we could find a few jobs for him to do!
My 75 yo Mom got her computer 5 years ago. She got her laptop, webcam, and projector 2 years ago. She did not want the laptop w/o projector b/c she needed to share pictures and videos at church LOL. Now we are to Skype her, not phone on landline. Now she has a new desktop, but is going wireless. This is definitely a two way street and multigenerational in my family of geeks!
Sheryl, I feel that you and your family are not “techno-geek” and “nerdy” about your passions. You are all simply “hip” and connected on different levels, spiritually and technologically. It seems that you have established your own “OurSpace” as opposed to the ubiquitous “MySpace”.

My son is a senior in college and I haven’t been great about send care packages during his time at school. So, I sent my 22yr son a care package for Valentine’s day that contained homemade treats and some candy. Instead of calling me or texting me to say thank you - he took a photo of himself holding the care package (with a “Thanks Mom” handwritten note) and posted it to his Tumblr page - knowing that I subscribe and would see it. Needless to say it was one of the proudest moments of this technology teacher/mom’s day!!!
I continue to be the geekiest person in my immediate family, which is a sad statement. I’ve peeked at wireless printing from anywhere in the house. I did manage to rewire the basement so that the satellite TV feed is now handy to the new elliptical exercise machine. Me, I prefer old Rockford Files episodes on dvds. Those leisure suits! Wonder if it’s safe to work out in one?

Like John, I am the techno-geekiest person in my house. However, my 11 year old son son is catching up fast. When we asked for his Christmas list, he gave us a PowerPoint presentation!
