TedxNYED: Learner First

TedxNYED: Learner First

I am driving home from NYC and while I know I should be devoting my time to the PLP communities, I couldn’t help myself- I had to come here first and reflect. It is such a rare thing when I have a chance to attend an event as a learner only and at TEDxNYED I was just that “learner only.” Don’t get me wrong,  I learn a great deal while I am presenting and engaging  audiences in the workshops and keynotes I am invited to give, however, it is rare that I am ever able to attend an event with no pressure to perform-where I.

Dream Catcher and Value Adder

Dream Catcher and Value Adder

I had an epiphany today. For most of you who lead change, run a company or ministry this is probably obvious. But for me– not so much. I was listening to John Maxwell on TV today and he shared something I had never considered. My mission, my purpose in all the work I do, whether keynoting, conferences, working with for profits like Intel or Microsoft or non profits like the EETT grant work and especially in the building of PLP, has to be about adding value to the lives of others. I know..I know.. for you guys it is a no brainer, but for.

The Notion of Leadership is Shifting

The Notion of Leadership is Shifting

What do you think of when you try and define the concept leadership? I surveyed my Twitter community recently and was struck with the diversity represented as they grappled with the idea. Most of the definitions spoke to leadership belonging to a group broader than individual leaders.  Which is a shift from the dictionary definition: lead⋅er⋅ship 1. the position or function of a leader: He managed to maintain his leadership of the party despite heavy opposition. 2. ability to lead: She displayed leadership potential. 3. a.

Why You Need a Personal Learning Network

Why You Need a Personal Learning Network

Frustrated I turned to my PLN on Twitter and asked– * What about kids talking to each other and learning socially is so hard to "get"? * Why is control such a huge part of school culture? Control of kids–control of teachers? * Why do we not trust students and think if we are talking - they are learning? * Why is restructuring the way we deliver curriculum so hard for teachers to accept? Wisdom of the Crowds I awoke this morning to their wisdom. I am so glad I have a PLN. I'd love to know your take to these questions .

Australia - Perth

Australia - Perth

After the ELH conference I was scheduled to fly across Australia to Perth and do an all day workshop at the Hale School. The campus was incredible and expansive. Participants came from all over Western Australia but the most exciting part for me personally was that Sue Waters was in attendance. I had collaborated with Sue online but had never met her face to face. Sue became my personal tour guide while in Western Australia and I learned a great deal about life in her region of the world. We arrived at our hotel in Perth and were thrilled at h.

I’m Back…

I’m Back…

It has been two months since I have posted. I don't know why I am telling you, because obviously if you are still hanging in there as my reader you know this to be true. I have been busy traveling, presenting, convening a conference and posting in the situated learning communities to which I belong- my scheduled was so packed I had to let something go and my blog drew the short straw. It's good to be back and I have a lot to tell you. My work with Will Richardson in Powerful Learning Practice has been at the forefront of where I have sp.

Learning2.008 Shanghai

Learning2.008 Shanghai

I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when my Dr. told me my illness would not allow me to fly to Shanghai and join the conference. I had been planning for months, obtained my Visa, even bought surprises I had planned on sharing with Jeff Utecht and other friends when I arrived. Jenny Luca and I had even made plans to finish our planning for the Australian branch of the International PLP cohort while we were at the conference together. Then I got the idea of still following through with the conference virtually. My thinking was that h.
